Finding your process as a director can be a journey. In this workshop, learn how local award-winning director, Kenny Riches, takes a film from idea to onscreen. We’ll explore the process of writing and directing a narrative feature film from pre-production to post-production, and beyond. We’ll dive into how to approach casting and locations as well as directing different types of scenes to get the most out of your actors, art direction, and cinematography by exploring character, choreography, pacing, and other aspects of creating an engaging film, all while working within a budget.

Kenny Riches

Writer/Director Kenny Riches was born in Toyota City, Japan; raised in Salt Lake City, Utah; and currently resides between SLC and Miami, Florida. Riches’ first feature film, Must Come Down premiered at Cinequest Film Festival in 2012. His 2015 feature film, The Strongest Man, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was released by AMC International and Kino Lorber. His follow up film, A Name Without A Place premiered at Miami International Film Festival in 2019 and was awarded Best Florida Feature Film at Key West Film Festival. Most recently his fourth feature film, Mouse, premiered at the Brooklyn Film Festival where it took home the Best Narrative Feature Film Award as well as the Grand Jury Prize. Mouse was also awarded a ten-city Oscar-qualifying theatrical run from Regal Cinemas for winning Best Feature Film at Film Fest Knox. He has received generous support from the Sundance Institute, Sun Valley Film Festival, US in Progress, the Knight Foundation, White Elephant Group, and PBS. His producer credits include My Heart Can’t Beat Unless You Tell It To (2020 Tribeca Film Festival) and Sanzaru (2020 Slamdance Film Festival). He is a co-founder of The Davey Foundation, a grant-giving organization for filmmakers founded in memory of David Fetzer. He is also a partner in the production company, Dualist.
