El Puesto is a short documentary film emerging from a long-term, participatory performance and installation by Punto de Inflexión, an artist collective led by Stephanie García and Peter Hay. Set within a market stand in the heart of Salt Lake City, the project invited a vibrant Latine, Hispanic, and Chicanx community to share stories, rituals, memories, and everyday experiences over the course of more than four months.
Inspired by the traditional mercado as a gathering place, El Puesto became a symbolic geographical “teleporting bridge”—a space where colors, sounds, smells, and gestures could evoke distant places while creating new connections in the present.
The film offers an intimate testimony of the artists’ experience of inhabiting this space and building relationships with the extraordinary community that gathers at this iconic market. Through encounters with regular visitors, shared moments of joy, and spontaneous exchanges, the film celebrates the generosity, humor, resilience, and cultural richness that emerge when people come together.
At a time when the lives, identities, and belonging of many Latine communities are increasingly contested by unjust political policies, El Puesto turns its attention toward what communities create and sustain every day: spaces of welcome, collective memory, cultural continuity, and joy. Rather than documenting a community from the outside, the film reflects on the relationships that made the project possible—and on the power of gathering, sharing, and being seen.
